Found in the southwestern part of Oklahoma, Lawton is the county seat of Comanche County. As of the 2020 census, Lawton was home to more than 90m,300 people. This made it the sixth largest city in the state, and the largest city found in the western part of Oklahoma.
The land where Lawton is found was once home to reservations established for the Comanche Kiowa, and Apache tribes. The city was one of the first established in the 20th century, with the founding usually identified as August 1901. The city is named for Major General Henry Ware Lawton, a Civil War veteran who ultimately died in action during the Philippine–American War.
Today, Lawton's economy is based on businesses related to the nearby Fort Sill Military Reservation. Health care, manufacturing, higher education, and retail are also major players in the city's economy.
