Facts about Midwest City, OK
Located in Oklahoma County, Midwest City is considered a part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. At the time of the 2010 census, the city was home to 54,371. That figure increased over the years, resulting in a population of 58,409 as of the 2020 census. Midwest City is the eighth largest city in Oklahoma.
The development of what would become Midwest City began when there was speculation about the establishment of an air field in the area. W.P. "Bill" Atkinson purchased land in hopes that the air field would come to pass. In fact, the name of Midwest Air Depot was selected for the new facility. Midwest City itself was incorporated on March 11, 1943.
The Midwest Air Depot would be renamed in honor of Major General Clarence L. Tinker, who became the first American general to be killed during World War II.
Tinker Air Force Base remains the single greatest supplier of jobs in the area. A number of other businesses that were established to support the base also feed the local economy. At present, the Midwest Regional Medical Center is considered the second largest source of jobs in Midwest City.
